When you look at a ‘confident’ person do you wish you were more like them? One of the easiest ways to become more confident in yourself is to work out why you don’t feel confident. What’s stopping you? What’s holding you back?
FEAR?
What are you afraid of?
- Delivering a presentation?
- Walking in to a networking event on your own?
- Spiders?
Whatever it is that you are afraid of you need to be honest with yourself, only then can you liberate yourself from the trap that may be holding you back! How about if you could turn your fears in to areas of confidence? Get rid of fear and become stronger in confidence, but to do this you first have to face up to what really rattles you and what’ really important to you!
- Fear of rejection?
- Fear of your own knowledge? Are you competent enough in the subject you need to be confident in?
- Fear of standing out? Are you afraid of confronting situations and prefer to hide behind a pull up banner?
- Fear of exposure? Are you afraid of people knowing things about you?
- Fear of being judged? Are you afraid of what people may think about you?
At the base of all fear is something you can work on. It can be broken down and handled in smaller chunks until it really doesn’t appear so frightening.
What are you afraid of? Public Speaking
When did this fear start? At school I was told I didn’t speak clearly enough to have a part in the school play
What do you think you could do to change this? Present to a small group of people I know
What are you going to do about it? Present at a small networking event I attend to build up my confidence
The four questions above can be adapted to any fear you have, ask yourself those questions and then you will realise it isn’t as bad as the bigger picture may seem. No one is expecting you to go straight out and talk in front of a room full of 300 people!
