Small Business Marketing

Posted by on 11:17 am in Business Development | 2 comments

I am passionate about small business development and a BIG part of this is how small businesses can adopt a marketing strategy that works for them. If you are using social media platforms as part of your strategy you could actually, in my opinion, be a) wasting your time or b) alienating your potential audience. If you were to walk in to a room full of strangers and shove a business card or flyer in their hand without any form of introduction what do you think they will do with what you have handed them? What would you do if you were on the...

From Start-up to Success

The Business Show is the largest of it’s kind in the South East of England and I am thrilled to be speaking there on Thursday 27th Novemeber, (3.3pm in Hall 4). There is a lot of information available for people thinking of starting up a business to getting their ideas of the ground. For this talk I wanted to look at the ‘limbo’ stage where the business is up and running…then what? If you are a happy plodder then this won’t be relevant to you but if you are keen to build a sustainable business, one that will grow...

Do We (Women) Really Speak a Different Language?

Do We (Women) Really Speak a Different Language?

As a linguist, writer and editor, language and communication is a HUGE part of my world. This is why I decided to explore the ‘Menspeak vs Womenspeak’ theory when I was invited to deliver a talk at the East Kent B2B Exhibition hosted by the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce. The idea was put to me to host a session for Women in Business and even though I took some flack from my male peers in the county the room was full and people even opted to sit on the floor. Do We Really Speak a Different Language? Most people who attended the...

Communication – A Skill that can be Learned?

Posted by on 10:33 am in The Communicator | 0 comments

Communication – A Skill that can be Learned It’s a fact that communication forms a fundamental part of every day of our lives. Whether that is buying a train ticket, talking to loved ones about what’s for dinner or pitching an idea to a potential client. Our days are filled with messages that we can choose what we do with them. Communication is, without a doubt, a two way process that when both sides understand the part they play, it has effective consequences. When one side speaks, the other listens – well in theory anyway. Listening is an...

Public Speaking – Part One

Published in The Kent Women in Business Magazine – Apr/July 2014 Public speaking is any occasion where you are required to talk or present in front of a group. This could be a room of 300 delegates or a presentation to your work colleagues or clients. If public speaking intimidates you, you are not alone. Here, and over the next few editions, we will look at ways of enhancing your own natural skills, helping you become the kind of speaker you would love to be. Have you watched people on stage and thought, ‘wow, they are a natural born...

KWIB Dine With Us

Posted by on 10:31 am in Networking | 0 comments

There is something almost ‘naughty’ like about planning an evening for women only. It has been brought to my attention, by MEN that they should organise their own ‘MEN ONLY’ events! My response to this is, ‘go ahead, and make sure it’s fun’. My businesses have been built on the power of constructive networking and some of the relationships I have made continue to grow as further opportunities arise. After the hugely successful Kent Women in Business Awards that I was fortunate enough to host back in...

Life’s Too Short

Posted by on 2:45 pm in Hilary Rambles | 0 comments

I received news this week that someone I adored had passed away due to cancer. She was far too young and her passing really had an effect on me. She was a friend who always made me smile and was always smiling herself and yet in a matter of days she was no longer with us. A very sad time but the impact it had on me personally has changed certain things in my own life this week. I started thinking about all the activities I am involved with and whether they were adding something to my life or simply draining me. It was time to start getting...

Do people need training on Telephone Skills?

Posted by on 12:53 pm in Courses, Training | 0 comments

The phone is such a BIG part of business that it may often be neglected in the ‘business improvement’ arena, so why do companies not train their staff to use the telephone in a way that reflects their company ethics? I had to phone an independently owned company not so long ago, they have roughly 45 staff. The person who answered the phone sounded as though they had just arrived for work experience as they didn’t know how to transfer me to the right person and didn’t even know who they were. (They owned the company for...
